AUGUST 3 UPDATE:  Due to forecasts of severe storms and extreme heat this evening, we are postponing tonight’s Midweek on the Midway movie. Sing 2 will be rescheduled for August 17.  Please join us next week, on August 10, for Raya and the Last Dragon!

Family-friendly movies and themed activities will be offered Wednesday nights through August 10

On summer evenings for more than a decade, members of the campus and broader South Side communities and their families have gathered on the Midway Plaisance for outdoor movies and fun for all ages. The annual Midweek on the Midway series, hosted by the Office of Civic Engagement in partnership with the Chicago Park District, returns on Wednesdays this year starting July 6 with a slate of six popular films and corresponding family-friendly activities set to run through August 10.

The series kicks off with a lively performance by the Jazz Links Ensemble, setting the stage for the jazz-centric Soul (sponsored by the University of Chicago Medical Center). On July 13, the first 150 attendees can enjoy traditional Columbian arepas courtesy of UChicago Dining and Chartwells Higher Education before Encanto. The following week, in honor of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, candy fans will have a chance to search for the golden ticket hidden in a Kilwins chocolate bar—free to the first 100 kids in attendance. The lucky winner will go home with a basket of sweets and a $50 Stan’s Donuts and Coffee gift card.

To get into the Luca spirit on July 27, attendees can learn about real-life sea monsters with a Jurassic Oceans activity led by the Field Museum and take home a basil plant (free for the first 100 kids) for making their own trenette al pesto, courtesy of University of Chicago’s Facilities Services and Brightview. On August 10, Stephanie Lupu and the Hyde Park Arts Center will teach attendees how to make their own dragon before Raya starts searching for hers in Raya and the Last Dragon. On August 17, families can bust a move with a Sing 2-inspired pre-movie choreography lesson led by Dance Connect Worldwide.

Moviegoers are encouraged to share their Midweek on the Midway fun by tagging @UChiEngagement and #midweekmidway in their photos and posts.

Midweek on the Midway will be held at 1130 Midway Plaisance, between Kimbark and Dorchester avenues.

Updates due to inclement weather will be posted on the Office of Civic Engagement’s social media platforms (@UChiEngagement on Twitter and Facebook).  Rain dates will be August 16 and 17.
