World Cities Day: Equitable Urban Development with Affordable Housing at the Core

World Cities Day: Equitable Urban Development with Affordable Housing at the Core

In recognition of Urban October and World Cities Day, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the University of Chicago will host a virtual panel discussion exploring innovative models of equitable urban redevelopment with affordable housing at the core.  This program will focus on policy levers to increase the availability of affordable housing for low-to-moderate income households while investing in supports to advance opportunity among multiple indicators, with emphasis on the Choice Neighborhoods program.  The event will highlight the equitable transformation experience of the Woodlawn Community on the South Side of Chicago as a successful Choice Neighborhood case study.

HUD leadership will share U.S. priorities to address affordable housing and offer critical perspectives on successful examples of inclusive urban transformation with affordable housing at the core.  Preservation of Affordable Housing (POAH), a 2011 Choice Neighborhood grant recipient, will share the ways in which the Choice Neighborhood program dollars were leveraged to recruit additional public and private dollars and helped to drive intentional, locally driven, equitable redevelopment strategies that invest in housing, people, and neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago.  The University of Chicago Office of Civic Engagement will discuss the role of anchor institutions in supporting community redevelopment with the unique and comprehensive investments in people and places required of equitable transformation.
