Virtual Event: The Trifecta: When a Pandemic Meets an Economic Recession and Racial Conflict
The last major U.S. Pandemic was the Influenza Pandemic of 1918. The U.S. unemployment rate has not been as high as it is today since the Great Depression of the 1930's. In addition, after the death of George Floyd the nation has not seen as many racial protests and riots since 1968, the year Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated.
This virtual discussion hosted by UChicago School of Social Service Administration will address the current intersection of COVID-19, high unemployment (financial distress), and racial conflict triggered by the recent police related murders of unarmed African Americans. The speaker will also discuss the historical relationship between the police, African Americans, protests and riots.
The role of Social Workers, Psychologists, and Licensed Counselors in decreasing police brutality and police killings will also be addressed.
By the end of this presentation you will be able to:
• Understand the intersection between COVID 19, the economic recession, and racial conflict
• Explain the history of the relationship between the police, African Americans, protests and riots.
• Draw parallels from historical police/African American relationships to current conflicts.
• Help decrease police brutality and police killings in your role as a behavioral health specialist.
This webinar satisfies 2 hours toward the 3 required for cultural competency for social workers.
