Entrepreneurship Essentials (E2) - Leadership Dynamics Within A Family-Owned Business

Join the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation for a workshop led by Jamie & Jessica Shah. In this workshop, Jamie & Jessica will discuss the following topics:

  • What it's like to work in a family business with family members
  • What it means to be a 'next generation leader' in a family business
  • How to scale a business while considering maintaining a legacy
  • Small business considerations - attracting talent, investing in your organization with limited capital, etc.

Speakers:

Jamie Shah (MBA '13), The Spice House, CEO. Prior to The Spice House, Jamie spent eight years at her family's business, Chem-Impex, running operations, customer service and quality. She was also previously the Lead Associate at Hyde Park Angels and Hyde Park Venture Partners and was selected as a Kauffman Fellows Finalist. She started her career at Goldman Sachs as an investment banker in the consumer retail group at and then was a financial analyst for Google Maps. Jamie holds a dual degree (BBA and BS) from The University of Wisconsin - Madison in Finance, Investments and Banking and Spanish Literature and Language and an MBA from The University of Chicago.

Jessica Shah (SSA '10) , Chem-Impex, Vice President of Human Resources and Legal . Chem-Impex, a biotechnology company specializing in providing amino acids and peptides for drug discovery. Prior to Chem-Impex, Jessica worked as an attorney with Bielski Law Office and Bronson & Kahn. She has also held legal positions at the American Medical Association and Stepan Company. Prior to her legal career, Jessica worked as a Social Worker with Community Support Services. Jessica holds a BA with highest honors from Purdue University in Psychology and Economics, an MA from The University of Chicago in Social Work and Health Administration Policy, and a JD from Northwestern University's School of Law.
