In recognition of the service local police officers and firefighters make to the city, each year the University of Chicago offers full-tuition scholarships to the children of Chicago Police Department, Chicago Fire Department, and University of Chicago Police Department officers who are accepted to the College. On April 6, Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson and Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago joined the University in recognizing the five members of the UChicago Class of 2020 who received Chicago Police and Fire scholarships.
The reception, held at the Logan Center, also featured remarks by David Miller, Neubauer Family Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics, Enrico Fermi Institute, and the College, himself a Police and Fire Scholarship recipient. John W. Boyer, Dean of the College; Sonya Malunda, Senior Associate Vice President for Community Engagement in the Office of Civic Engagement; and Eric M. Heath, UChicago Associate Vice President of Safety and Security; also spoke at the reception.
The University has been awarding the Police and Fire scholarships since 1976. This year, UChicago created a new scholarship for children of Chicago Public Schools educators. Both scholarships are part of UChicago Promise, the University’s multipronged initiative to help students from the city of Chicago gain admission to, pay for, and thrive in college.
David Miller is the Neubauer Family Assistant Professor in the UChicago Department of Physics, Enrico Fermi Institute, and the College. The son of two Chicago firefighters, he received the Police and Fire Scholarship in 2001.
