Amid an increase in public funding for street-level violence intervention programs, the University of Chicago has introduced a groundbreaking initiative called the Community Violence Intervention Leadership Academy. This initiative, unveiled on Monday, aims to equip anti-violence workers nationwide with the necessary skills to effectively oversee and expand their operations.
The establishment of the Community Violence Intervention Leadership Academy was prompted by the surge in gun violence during the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in a significant influx of public funds. Many nonprofits and community organizations found themselves ill-prepared to manage these funds adequately.
Dr. Chico Tillmon, the director of the CVI Leadership Academy, emphasized the need for extensive management training to enable individuals across the country to handle the funding properly and document the interventions effectively. Tillmon made these remarks during a well-attended event at the Chicago Theological Seminary.
