Supporting newly arrived migrant students in Chicago Public Schools

Supporting newly arrived migrant students in Chicago Public Schools

More than 5,700 newly arrived immigrant students have enrolled in Chicago Public Schools since the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year (Chalkbeat). Many are refugees and asylum seekers facing a variety of challenges navigating systems and barriers in this new city and country. What does that mean for the work happening to support newly arrived young people in our city and schools?

Join UChicago To&Through on Thursday, April 4th from 2:00-3:00pm (CST) to hear from experts at the Latino Policy Forum and educators at two CPS schools - Brighton Park Elementary and North-Grand High School– who are working in real time to support their newcomer students. This session will explore the federal and city implications and high-level educational issues for newcomers and provide an opportunity to learn from the innovative and responsive work happening in two Chicago schools to ensure that newcomer students have the support needed to thrive in their new schools communities.
