As Executive Director of Student Civic Engagement Initiatives, Shaz is responsible for aligning student civic engagement activities across campus to improve their efficacy, stimulate innovation, and create new partnerships. He also leads a number of initiatives focused on local education partnerships, including the Neighborhood Schools Program (NSP). Previously, he was the founding director of the Community Programs Accelerator, which supports the success of South Side nonprofit organizations through capacity building programming. Shaz earned a bachelor's degree in sociology and a master's degree in computer science from the University of Chicago. Prior to joining the Office of Civic Engagement, he worked primarily on education issues relating to teacher training and the digital divide. He also served as a Peace Corps volunteer.
